Culture Eats Strategy For Lunch

Culture Eats Strategy for Lunch (This is the third post based on Primed to Perform by Neel Doshi and Lindsay McGregor.) In Primed to Perform, Doshi and McGregor present a method to measure Total Motivation (TOMO) for an individual or a staff. Positive motivation means rising a worker’s sense of ply, purpose and potential. Negative motivation consists of components of emotional strain, economic stress, and inertia. Increase positive and decrease adverse, they write, and motivation â€" and performance â€" go up. But why? Doshi and McGregor consider that motivated staff are more creative. They adapt extra easily to a quickly altering work environment, and within the 21st century, each work surroundings is rapidly altering. They use the navy term VUCA to describe the uncertainty of a battle (or business.) The higher the VUCA think about your setting, the extra adaptive and inventive your employees have to be. Adaptive efficiency, Doshi and McGregor write, will result in higher success than Tactical efficiency, which measures how properly a worker can execute a plan. 19th-century military strategist Helmuth Von Moltke is usually quoted as having mentioned “No plan survives the first contact with the enemy.” The greatest leaders perceive that guiding rules are simpler than detailed plans. (“Take the hill” somewhat than “Circle left and go up three miles, then move in from the north.”) Culture beats technique each time, as a result of culture can adapt to circumstances. Tactical efficiency measure the ability to stick to a plan. Adaptive performance measure the power to diverge from a plan. The script may work in eighty% of the decision center’s calls, however the 20% of calls where it doesn’t may be the difference between failure and success. Shawn Parr, CEO ofBulldog Drummond, an innovation and design consultancy, writing for Fast Company, says: “Think about it like a nurturing habitat for success. Culture cannot be manufactured. It has to be genuinely nurtured by everybody fro m the CEO down. Ignoring the well being of your tradition is like letting aquarium water get soiled.” He cites organizations as diverse as online shoe retailer Zappos and the U.S. Marine Corps as examples of tradition that lives in each single member. Members hold themselves accountable to a culture that's ingrained in them from their first day. Adaptive cultures are more likely to succeed as a result of they give attention to big picture goals; employees are engaged sufficient to adapt to changing customer or market needs. Tactical cultures stick to the plan and measure goals that may not be the proper ones, proper now. Tactical workers have been most likely the primary historically to report (peevishly) “The operation was a hit, however the patient died.” Published by candacemoody Candace’s background consists of Human Resources, recruiting, training and assessment. Mom Stress Is At Its Worst After This Many Children - Fairygodboss

Mother Stress Is At Its Worst After This Many Children - Fairygodboss It is anything but difficult to expect that more children = more pressure is a precise suspicion. What's more, to a point, that conviction stands right. In any case, agreeing toPeople andToday, the mothers who experience the most elevated levels of parental pressure arent those with a Brady Bunch-sized brood. Or maybe, mothers with 3 children report more nervousness than any others.Theres a really basic motivation behind why mothers with 4+ kids dont stress very as much as their 3-kid partners: there sufficiently isnt time in the day. Therapist Dr. Janet Taylor disclosed to Today that theres sufficiently not space in your mind for compulsiveness when you get to at least four kids. The more youngsters you have, the more certain you become in your child rearing capacities. You need to give up and afterward youre simply grateful when they all get the opportunity to class on time. While looking over the 7,000+ moms who took an interest in Todays learn about mother pressure, Dr. Taylor saw a critical uptick in uneasiness from eager mothers pregnant with their third youngsters, particularly in examination with mothers anticipating their subsequent children. Basically, the study uncovered a level playing field of worry for mothers with a couple of children, an intense distinction once a third child enters the condition, and a significant drop-off once the fourth arrives.Whats behind this maternal pressure? Obviously, the appropriate response varies for each individual, however the review showed cash as a significant stressor, alongside an absence of hours in the day and (sadly) an absence of help from their accomplices. Curiously, the Today study recommended that 60% of overviewed mothers felt more tension over their female kids than over their male children. Considering the political scene encompassing ladies nowadays, this is unfortunately barely a stun.

Job Path Working in the Transportation Industry - Work It Daily

Occupation Path Working in the Transportation Industry - Work It Daily Thought about working in the transportation business? This profession meeting will take you through the good and bad times you can expect in the position, the stuff to get the activity, what you can hope to procure and that's only the tip of the iceberg. My activity title is security executive for a significant distance shipping organization. I have 12 years of involvement with the field. I would portray myself as clever, dedicated and social. My ethnicity is Caucasian, and I am a lady. I don't think either thing has aided or harmed me in my activity as a security chief since I have never encountered any employment segregation. My responsibility is to ensure the truckers play out their occupations securely and as per the law. I need to check the truckers' logs and ensure they haven't run for such a large number of hours without breaks and ensure they have the entirety of their wellbeing hardware and that they keep their trucks kept up for security. One confusion individuals have about wellbeing chiefs is it's a position only for appear. Individuals think shipping organizations push truckers to make time at any expense, however this is unquestionably not the situation at my organization. Security is significant in light of the fact that lives are in question. On a size of 1 to 10 I would rate my activity fulfillment as a 10. I really wouldn't transform anything about my activity. I love each day of it. This activity moves my heart since I get the chance to work so intimately with the truck drivers. I become acquainted with them so well, and they become more acquainted with me and they realize I care about them and I need them to adhere to the standards since I need them to be protected and to have a decent take. I certainly feel like I have discovered my sweet spot throughout everyday life. The thing I need individuals to know is that it's rarely past the point of no return. At the point when I was 47 years of age I got a separation and went from being a full-time housewife to supporting myself. I never figured I could do that. I was raised to be a legitimate southern woman. I wasn't raised to tell large, beefy men what to do. I generally felt that truck drivers were large, tough men who consistently realized what to do and never had a second's uncertainty. For what reason would they hear me out? In any case, my manager instructed me to disclose to them they needed to do x, y, and z, so I strolled in there like I had the world on a string and revealed to them they needed to do it. What's more, they did. I got into this industry and occupation on the grounds that my sibling was leaving the organization and suggested me for the activity. I met for it and got it. The main thing I would change is I would have had increasingly self-assurance a great deal sooner. I discovered that in a subsequent everything can be removed, regardless of whether you are doing precisely what you should do, so don't put anything off and live each day like it may be your last. I took in this when a trucker had a molotov mixed drink dropped onto his truck from a bridge. He came out of it okay, however it was a reminder for me. The most significant thing I have found out about the working scene outside of school is that it isn't the prettiest or the most famous or even the sharpest one that succeeds. The one arrives each day on schedule and does as well as can possibly be expected. The most peculiar thing that at any point transpired in this activity was meeting my subsequent spouse and beginning to look all starry eyed at. I get going to work every day since I realize I'm required and I realize individuals would miss me in the event that I was no more. My proudest second was not long before my first supervisor resigned. He said that working with me was an excursion, however an undertaking. He was destroying, and I am destroying now simply contemplating it. My activity is really distressing. I am answerable for the security of many individuals fathers and mothers and married couples. It's alright, however, and I have nevere needed to leave my place of employment. I keep up an agreeable work-life balance by making work a subsequent home. I feel like those individuals are my family, as well. A harsh compensation extend for the situation in my general vicinity is $36,000. For me, that is sufficient to live easily. Concerning the excursion time related with this activity, I take seven days one after another off a couple of times each year. This activity required some particular preparing, yet didn't require a specific degree. The activity required a secondary school confirmation, and I was sent to another city for preparing. Individuals and hierarchical abilities are the most supportive to me in my activity. I would prescribe this activity to any companion who was thinking about it. In five years, I will be well into retirement age. So in the event that I could compose my own ticket, I would be resigned by at that point. This is a genuine vocation story as advised to DiversityJobs.com and is one of numerous meetings with proficient transportation laborers, which among others incorporate a Truck Driver and a Courier. Dublin to Sofia, Bulgaria A Powerful Week of Self-Discovery

Dublin to Sofia, Bulgaria A Powerful Week of Self-Discovery Where to begin?I’m typing on a balcony overlooking a dense forest speckled with the 16th-century rooftops of Veliko Tarnovo. A fluffy light brown cat has taken this opportunity to jump onto my lap and nap. It’s early morning and there’s a mild chill in the air, so this is a welcome addition. With her help, I’ve been converted from being a strict ‘dog person’ to a lover of both animals. This was a sign of things to come. Power Week has been a chance for me to learn about Enhancv’s values, discovering this company of friends. That was the theme of the week: ‘A Company of Friends’, and I was curious to see how would that translate into our upcoming activities. My expectations to date had been shaped by reading a piece by Vassy, Enhancv’s Digital Strategist, about  Enhancv’s Spring Power Week. The event was painted as a transformative period bringing new projects to life with small groups while building genuine and lasting relationships with the team. I couldn’t wa it to experience this. Not all Enhancers start their first day at Power Week, so I was thankful that I could ‘break the ice’ during a time of self-exploration and development. I’m hoping that this blog post provides you with an insight into what can a group that not only shares the same values but lives them and puts them into practice can achieve. How I ate the tongue, eyeballs, and brain of a lambI had never traveled to Bulgaria so I had few expectations as I landed at Sofia Airport. Our CEO, Georgi, was waiting for me outside. Georgi, or Joro as friends call him, welcomed me with a handshake, a hug, and a smile that instantly put me at ease. Before I could digest my new environment, I was sitting in a traditional Bulgarian restaurant in the center of Sofia. We discussed the most pressing topic of the moment: food. The recommendation was to eat the tongue, eyeballs, and brain of a lamb. OK, that’s probably a bit much for most people. There was no pressure to eat it, but I h ad read so much about how delicious the local food was that it took little persuasion to make my decision. With a risk of laboring on the graphics food in question, the eyeball was my favorite part.I then had the chance to drop into the Enhancv HQ for a quick tour of where the magic happens. What a space! The building blended into the neighborhood so much so that I could have easily missed it. One stairway later and I’m struck by the chic and artistic space that spanned in front of me. From the developers’ room to the marketing room, you could tell that the team designed each desk and meeting area with comfort and collaboration in mind. What impressed me most was the fact that they retained the dated Bulgarian features which came with the building throughout. From the 70s fireplace to the rotary phone on the wall. Awesome.Having worked in a number of US-based tech startups, I’ve had my fair share of free snacks and beanbags. This office said more about the company than any othe r I had worked for before. The values of this group, values I would see in action later in the week, were all around. That’s something that made me excited when thinking about building out the Dublin office. Actually, using the word office to describe this place was doing it no justice.  Related articles:A complete guide to the Enhancv platform: customizing sectionsEnhancv’s New Pricing3 ways our new feature Ask for Feedback will help you land your dream jobI immediately felt as if I was part of something bigger than profitVelina, Head of Talent Leadership, collected me from my Airbnb, which was only a few doors down from her home. We traveled for just under 3 hours to reach medieval Bulgarian capital of Veliko Turnovo. As we approached the town the rest of the team greeted me. It’s rare that you meet a group who welcome you as warmly as they did. From the outset, they made sure they constantly spoke in English and they’d explain anything a foreigner wouldn’t understand. This meant that in almost every conversation I learned a little more about the great history of Bulgaria.  Power Week began with a welcoming dinner at a restaurant called  Shtastliveca, which served mouth-watering meatballs. The dinner was an opportunity for me to introduce myself. I covered all the details of who I was and what I had been doing prior to joining the team. Surrounded by a group of ambitious 20 somethings, where at 28 I was older than the company average, was certainly unexpected! Referencing experience I had as a former recruitment consultant and working as part of the Ad Operations team at LinkedIn generated some interest. But it was talking about my passions in travel, martial arts, and my fiancé Becky (fishing for brownie points) that triggered the most conversation. Following some laughs at my expense, we got the food and drinks underway. Joro set the tone for the evening with a toast on the company’s values and secondary to that its objectives. This struck me . He spoke from the heart and I immediately felt as if I was part of something bigger than profit.  The first working day…We based ourselves for the week in a coworking space  Freedom21  in the center of Veliko Tarnovo. Like many of the restaurants nearby, the back of the office benefited from views over the cliffside homes and endless forest. At any point, you could go from problem-solving to taking in the vast scenery. It was a truly memorable place and for the busy week that was ahead, a place I was thankful for.I spent that morning having breakfast with Vessy, Chief Strategy Officer, who was the first Dublin based employee. Eager to pick her brain on many topics, I filtered it down to some areas. That included what it was like to work remote for over a year, what the biggest risks to the business this year are, and how to say ‘thank you’ in Bulgarian. If the name didn’t give it away, Vessy is native to Bulgaria. But her dark humor and quick wit showed that 3 years in Dub lin had put her well on her way to understanding our Gaelic ways. The conversation was exploratory but productive at the same time. We talked relationship building, establishing credibility, process improvement, hiring for Dublin, and company culture. Setting the tone for how one-on-ones would go in the future, I left with almost more questions that I had going into the meeting. That was actually a good thing. In contrast to the hundreds of meetings I had before, our conversation shook the preconceived plans I had and forced me to re-strategize the week ahead to make a further impact once back in Dublin. The challenge of the weekWe returned to the coworking space and received our first challenge of the week. We arranged ourselves in groups of 3 tasked with identifying an idea that could be easy to implement, and significantly beneficial to Enhancv’s current service offering. My name was on a pink post-it along with Deni (Culture Communications) Vassy so we, of course, named our te am ‘Team Pink’. Brainstorming ideas was fun. I could quickly see how creative and passionate my teammates were about the existing product offering and how effective they were at articulating ideas. We closed on the idea of bringing video to our about section of the website. Granted, not the most innovative of ideas, but something we could pilot and integrate across all the businesses communications if successful. We went for it.  That evening, with a view to getting some downtime after a packed day at the office, we booked into a City Walking Tour of Veliko Tarnovo. The guide naturally picked on me throughout the entire walk as I was the stranger, the foreigner, the one who needed to learn every aspect of Bulgarian history and pronounce 90 plus character Bulgarian words which ran across the top of nearby, historically significant, buildings. Retention of historical information that evening was at an all-time low. That said, I learned a ton of interesting facts from types of food and architecture to battles won. As the tour progressed, it seemed the neighboring countries which bordered Bulgaria all took something originally Bulgarian as their own. All said in good jest. I believe.Listen when others speak, and hear when they are quietThe next day we began with a presentation on ‘Listening when others speak, and hear when they are quiet’. It’s the basis of any form of effective communication, whether in person or online. But so many people fail to do just that. We were assigned names out of a hat and responsible for setting up and delivering a one-on-one meeting. As luck would have it I pulled Vessy’s name. I had an opportunity to continue where we left off after yesterday’s breakfast. I was mindful about using our time together wisely and this exercise was the best facilitator for just that. Unlike the others, who had been working together for quite some time, Vessy I were very much getting to know each other. This meant that our meetings, irrespe ctive of format, were quite informal. This didn’t take away from the usefulness of our conversations together. I left feeling more confident we could achieve great things back on home soil. That evening we celebrated both Volen (Co-founder newly appointed Chief Marketing Officer) Joro’s birthdays. The dual celebration placed us all first in a restaurant called Ego 2 and then in the local Tequila bar. Until the early hours where we laughed about Irish pronunciation and the terrifying martial arts defense moves some of the engineers were learning.Orienteering trail around Veliko TarnovoWhat better way to come down from back to back days in the office than an activity day. The secret activity, which went from Plan A to Plan B due to the Irish weather I brought from Dublin, was revealed to us that morning. In our teams, we were to undertake an orienteering trail unique to each team and find clues to win points. We received a map with limited direction and told to go on our way. Th e team with the most points, displaying the strongest teamwork, would win. Clues in the form of QR codes were scattered around the city. We had to scan each one to reveal the next step. We ended up wandering around the forest that circled the town from the north but ultimately had a great time. The activity exposed the qualities in each of us as individuals such as leadership, communication, competitiveness, and how well we worked with others. Coming last in the competition was a low point for our team, but as eternal optimists, we spun it down to being all too similar. The activity was done and dusted by the afternoon and the day continued with a visit to an Ethnographic Village an hour outside of the city. This was my favorite part of the trip. It was like a history lesson on steroids. From traditional Bulgarian weddings, sweets, and clothing, to finding out about performed customs specific to each area in Bulgaria. This provided me a further insight into the ancestral past of the people around me.On the last official day of Power Week, we completed our team presentations. The ideas from team to team were impressive. All of them were relatively easy to execute and had clearly defined impact matched with realistic timelines. It was clear that everyone invested the time needed to produce good work. It also highlighted what we could achieve with structure, accountability, and teamwork. The winning team comprised of an idea which saw an internal lecture series running to leverage the expertise of our team for the benefit of others. After lunch, we returned to do our last group activity of the week, a classic trust exercise. As I closed my eyes, the team formed a circle. Before I knew it they were tossing me at the mercy of those around me. I was less concerned about trust and more concerned about whether everyone that circled me could carry my weight. But lo and behold, they did. We all took turns and it was a nice way to close out what had been a truly memorable and beneficial week. The beginning of an end…A week after returning to Dublin, everything is still replaying in my mind. From getting to understand what makes the founders tick to building meaningful relationships with my new colleagues, and after that week, friends. I can’t help but look forward to the next one. Unlike other onboarding weeks I’ve participated in in the past, there was a sense of achievement and personal growth after it. This validated the theme of the week, ‘A company of friends’. I hope by reading this piece you felt that too.If you’re in Dublin and are interested in joining our team or know someone who could be a good fit, I’d love to hear from you. Navigating the Gig Economy Tips for Independent Workers

Navigating the Gig Economy Tips for Independent Workers You’ve heard of the gig economy â€" a buzzword otherwise known as the sharing economy, on-demand workforce or independent workers. These days it’s reshaping the way many people work and opening employment doors that weren’t available a decade ago. Workers are shifting from working a classic 9 to 5 job to freelance work, making the transition from being employed by a company to work for themselves. This shift in employment puts workers in control of their work environment, all the way from when they work to what types of jobs they choose to do. A free-market system at its core, the gig economy is comprised of temporary, flexible jobs. Companies bring on independent contractors and freelancers instead of full-time employees, and in many cases, for short-term engagements. While many people are familiar with the gig economy as the on-demand platforms like Uber, Lyft, Postmates and Amazon Flex, traditional examples of gig employees in the workforce have included freelancers, independent contractors, project-based workers, and temporary or part-time hires. In today’s tech-reliant age, this basically means that anyone with a smartphone and unlimited data plan (or a good indie café with fast wifi and a power outlet) can work anywhere. Gig Economy: The Facts The gig economy is taking hold around the world as workers redefine what it means to be employed. Across the U.S. alone, 57 million people â€" or 36 percent of workers â€" call themselves gig workers. A further 24 percent of workers have an alternate work arrangement that they consider their primary job. The gig economy has become so popular that 30% of Americans would quit their current job to go work the gig economy if that meant they could make the same amount of money. And many people can. But just like anything, being successful as a gig worker takes time, practice and some trial and error. Below, are some best practices and tips for you’ll want to implement if you plan on making the leap. Know What Type if Gig Worker You’ll Be Gig workers fall into one of two categories â€" the independent worker or the contingent worker. Independent workers or freelancers are their own manager, submitting invoices and billing for the services and skills they provide to individuals and businesses. On the flip side, the contingent worker is employed by a company but has fewer benefits than regular employees and has little if any job security. Gig workers, as a whole, usually fit into one of the four categories: Freelancers â€" When working as a freelancer, gig workers provide a service or skill, such as design, photography, or writing. Freelance marketplace â€" Gig platforms such as Uber, Airbnb, and Upwork let gig workers provide a service on-demand for hire. Self-employed gig workers â€" Small business owners and tradespeople fall into this category. “Other” â€" Still a big part of the gig economy, this “other” area encompasses freelance positions such as affiliate marketing, Etsy, and eBay as platforms for people to be self-employed. Establish Routines Routines don’t have to be associated with boring bureaucracy. In fact, they’re your best friend when it comes to enhancing focus and performance â€" ask any successful freelancer and they will tell you so. Establishing routines in your work might mean keeping a schedule; following to-do lists; starting the day with the most challenging work; or taking care of that client call first thing. However, not all routines need to be work-related. Successful freelancers often find improved productivity and focus by incorporating self-care (sleep, nutrition, exercise) into one’s life. Both enhance people’s sense of order and control in uncertain circumstances â€" which often arise when you’re working for yourself. Find Purpose in Your Work This might seem like a no brainer but doing purposeful work is a driving force behind the success of independent workers. Everyone wants to be happy at their job, but purpose creates a bridge between personal interests and a need in the world â€" it can be a big distinction between successful independents and the ones who aren’t. Connect With People One of the biggest complaints that independent works have is the lack of human connection in their work. In the traditional workspace, connections happen in a physical office, taking lunch with co-workers or attending a weekly happy hour on Fridays. Since this is not a readily available option for many independent workers, it’s important to go out of your way to develop working relationships. Try collaborating with contacts in your field or take your workflow to a co-working space where there more of a sense of community than your home office. Create a Place to Work Being able to work anywhere is both one of the biggest benefits and biggest pitfalls for independent workers. Even though there’s beauty in portable work, creating a space for productive work will help prevent feelings of rootlessness. This need for a “place” to be productive is also a driving factor in the rise of coworking spaces around the globe. Learning to navigate the gig economy is not without its challenges. But just like anything it can take practice and some trial and error to figure out what works best for your working style. To learn more about why more people are making the switch from traditional employment to the gig economy and tips to get started as an independent worker. Treat Your Career Like a Labyrinth Not a Ladder - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Treat Your Career Like a Labyrinth Not a Ladder - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Our school system teaches all of us to fit in. We go to high school to prepare for college, just like the army trains in boot camp before landing on the battlefield. College is supposed to educate, prepare and guide us into a corporate job. Entry-level corporate workers are instructed on how to climb the corporate ladder to have a successful career. From the water boy or girl, to the cubicle warrior, to an office and finally, a private jet, or so were told. This system is completely broken in a world where technology has shattered corporate hierarchies, and given everyone free speech and visibility. Other factors include the generational gap and the false promise of job security. So how do we treat our careers in this new environment? The dreaded corporate ladder The corporate ladder exists because it has for generations and it has worked well, until now. The fact that your intern has just as much as a voice as your CEO means that there is a shift in power and platform. Putting in decades worth of service in exchange for a pension, stock options, a company car, and an executive salary doesnt work anymore. The best way to move up a corporate ladder is to switch companies, get higher salaries each time, with more experience, and then progress from there. People who try to stay at a company too long actually dont move up the ladder, they stay where they are or are forced to quit because someone else can be hired to do their job cheaper. Millennials are going to spearhead this career management change because they job hop and because many people this age can start online companies, without having to be rich now. A corporate ladder moves up in one direction. You go from an entry-level worker, to a manager, to a director, to a vice president, to the CEO. Larger companies have Sr. and Jr. level positions for each career phase as well. The problem is that you cant get to the top anymore by moving in one direction, and the economy has given corporations leverage so that its even harder and more competitive to go on that journey. The ladder is created by people that dont share your goals. Companies care about their hierarchies, not the way in which you manage your career. Thats up to you! If we dont treat our careers like a ladder anymore, then what should we do? The mysterious labyrinth maze You might have heard the word labyrinth from the old Greek mythology, where a legendary artificer Daedalus built a Labyrinth for King Minos of Crete at Knossos. It held a Minotaur, which is a half man and half bull, which was eventually killed by Theseus. In this case, it was a maze that was almost impossible to get out of. There is no right or wrong way to navigate through this kind of maze and everything in unpredictable. In the Greek example, the Minotaur could almost appear out of nowhere and kill you. Your career should be treated like a labyrinth, and it already is. Aside from Greek mythology, labyrinths are symbolic for moving toward salvation or enlightenment. In your career, its the journey that you should be excited about, not false promises of corporate promotion. The journey isnt one directional or linear. Instead, its a path that you have to create and experience. The labyrinth way of thinking about your career illustrates that change is constant, nothing is guaranteed and you decide which path to take, not someone else. Besides, wheres the thrill in climbing a ladder that has a system and politics around it? Why not a labyrinth with surprises, failures, learnings and achievement! Your turn How are you managing your career? Are you trying to climb a corporate ladder or are you in a labyrinth?

Batman, The Dark Knight Ive been quite obsessed about Batman since I was 6-years-old.   I collected comics, cards and action figures.   My favorite part about Batman was the fact that he didnt have super powers.   Anyone can be Batman, maybe not physically or emotionally, but we all have his vulnerabilities and can be as strong and confident as him.   We can be righteous and do for others, saving and changing lives.   The movie arrives in theaters on July 18th and promises to be the highlight of the summer and worth the overly priced $10 fee to see a movie these days. SPOILER ALERT Two-Face in the final scene [youtube=http://youtube.com/watch?v=YRjpfMHB2IE]

How Do You Keep Yourself Healthy While Working Overseas

How Do You Keep Yourself Healthy While Working Overseas When it comes to working abroad or making your new home in an entirely new country, keeping yourself healthy may be the farthest thing from your mind. After all, you’ve got a lot to worry about already, right? Even so, your health and well-being should always be one of your main priorities, if not at the forefront of your concerns â€" otherwise your overseas career may end more abruptly than you think. Here are some tips to keep yourself healthy while working overseas or moving abroad, besides getting expat medical insurance. Get vaccinations. Working in another country will always be an exciting change, but we have to remember that with a change of scenery also comes with the risk of being infected with serious diseases, especially when tropical countries are involved. As such it’s always a good idea to get vaccinations. Visit your doctor and ask about specific vaccinations that you can take, such as those that protect against malaria, hepatitis, and typhoid. Hydrate regularly. It’s very easy to forget about drinking water when you’re working, especially if your job involves manual labor. So if you’re going to be doing a lot of walking during your trip, make sure you hydrate regularly. Never go outside without a bottle of purified water or two in your bag, preferably purchased from a reputable convenience store as regular tap water may not agree with your constitution. Also, if you’re going to be working outside in hot weather, be sure to bring something along to protect you from the heat, such as a cap or an umbrella. Watch what you eat. One of the most exciting things to do when traveling or working abroad is sampling the local cuisine and delicacies, especially on your first few days in your new host country. There’s nothing wrong with being adventurous when it comes to food.   In fact, it’s a great way to experience the culture.   You just need to watch   exactly what you’re eating and how the food itself is prepared. Otherwise, you may be looking at some gastrointestinal issues that could confine you to your hotel room or even in a hospital if you’re not careful. To prevent this, always eat at reputable and clean-looking restaurants and food outlets. Avoid street food at all costs, especially those that involve seafood or shellfish. Also, wash your hands before and after every meal. Be sure to get enough rest. When it comes to working abroad, it’s always tempting to work long hours just to get the job done. Not only do we end up impressing our bosses, but we also get paid extra in the process. However, always remember it’s not just your own personal time suffering for every hour of overtime.   It can affect your health as well. For every day that you end up having little to no quality rest, the more stress and fatigue builds up in your system.   And that   could lead to all sorts of health problems. Always make sure you get an adequate amount of sleep, no matter what. Make sure to pack enough sunscreen and mosquito repellent. If your new job is somewhere sunny or tropical, then you’re sure to encounter not just hot, sunny weather.   And likely a lot of biting mosquitoes. Avoid the painful sunburn as well as itchy mosquito bites by regularly applying sunscreen and mosquito ointment whenever you’re working outdoors. Youll be able to concentrate on work without being burnt to a crisp or itching all over. And you’ll also be avoiding serious mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. Don’t let your overseas career suffer because of sickness or disease. By practicing these simple tips you’ll ensure your good health and well-being wherever you go.
